As we advance into the next phase of our consulting project, it is time to reflect on the journey so far, the insights we have gained, and the next steps in the project. The opportunity to work with a luxury sports apparel brand has been both challenging and enriching, particularly in the realms of sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement. These two elements are critical not only to the brand's identity but also to its future in an increasingly competitive and sustainability-conscious industry. As we completed our interim presentation milestone, I found myself reflecting on the innovative approaches we have taken to address sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement in this industry. This reflection includes how we’ve addressed the complexities of sustainability reporting and how stakeholder and consumer engagement is being refined for the company’s next steps.

Phase One: Competitive Benchmarking, Frameworks and Scoring Methodology

The first phase of our project focused on competitor benchmarking, analyzing six leading brands in the premium athletic wear space. This involved developing a robust scoring methodology that covered several sustainability metrics such as climate action, supply chain transparency, circular economy initiatives, and water usage. Our research also involved diving deep into sustainability frameworks, such as the Global Reporting Index (GRI), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). These frameworks provided essential guidance on how to strengthen the company’s sustainability reporting and align it with industry standards. One of the more challenging yet rewarding tasks was the development of a competitive matrix that assessed the brands across multiple dimensions including impact report quality, use of data, sustainability practices, frameworks utilized, and stakeholder engagement. This matrix helped us to quantify the relative strengths and weaknesses of each brand and provided a foundation for our recommendations. Especially for us, this was a perfect opportunity to conduct a gap analysis for our client through the ratings.

An overview of our progress so far:

Our team has made significant progress in completing several key tasks:

  • Developed a comprehensive competitive benchmarking analysis of six leading brands in the premium sports apparel industry
  • Created a detailed scoring matrix that evaluates sustainability reporting practices across various dimensions, including climate action and supply chain transparency
  • Conducted in-store visits to assess the real-world implementation of sustainability practices and gather qualitative insights.
  • Analyzed relevant regulatory frameworks and reporting standards, ensuring that our client is well-positioned to meet current and emerging regulations
  • Presented interim findings and recommendations to the client, and incorporated feedback for the next steps.

Team Collaboration

I believe every professional journey is enriched by the people who share it. Working alongside three accomplished women, each bringing unique expertise and unwavering commitment to their work, has made this experience particularly meaningful. The diversity of perspectives has greatly enhanced our approach to the project. The interim presentation to the client marked a crucial milestone, synthesizing our findings and recommendations into actionable insights. We identified key performance indicators (KPIs) crucial for the athletic wear industry, with climate action and circular economy initiatives emerging as our priorities. This analysis has laid a strong foundation for our next stage which is delivering an impact report, conducting a design workshop, and consumer engagement strategy.

Next Steps

Looking ahead, we move into an exciting phase with a design thinking workshop aimed to develop creative solutions for consumer engagement. The workshop will focus on three fundamental pillars:

  • Desirability: Understanding and addressing what the customer truly values in terms of sustainability, and how that can drive engagement
  • Feasibility: Identifying realistic implementation opportunities within the company that can be actioned in the short and medium term.
  • Viability: Ensuring that these sustainability initiatives align with the company’s long-term business model and strategy.

As I reflect on the progress so far, I am inspired by how this project has transformed my understanding of sustainability reporting. The opportunity to work at the intersection of creative engagement and fundamental research has been particularly enriching. The upcoming design workshop represents an exciting pivot point in our project, offering the chance to transform our  findings into innovative solutions. We are eager to incorporate client feedback into our final report, which will help shape the company's sustainability position in an increasingly competitive landscape. I look forward to seeing how our work will contribute to advancing sustainable practices in this dynamic industry.
