Reflecting on sustainability, it strikes me as more than just a prevailing trend, it is a deeply ingrained value shaped by a lifetime of awareness. Growing up, the importance of conserving natural resources was a lesson I learned early on, and one that echoed throughout my development. As conversations around climate change became increasingly mainstream, the imperative to consider our environmental footprint has become a constant consideration in both my personal and professional spheres. These discussions, once reserved for academic circles, now find their way into casual chats with friends and family.
I came to SIPA with a motivation to deepen my understanding of sustainable development and to explore how the private sector can contribute to this vital effort. This drive was fueled by my previous work with underserved communities through roles at the United Nations and various NGOs. Now, having the opportunity to do a consulting project for a small food company, been afforded a firsthand look at how sustainability is more than a concept, it’s a practice. Our client, the company owner, embodies this commitment through their dedication to employee well-being and the creation of healthier consumer options. Yet, the journey from embracing sustainability to operationalizing it in a way that also supports profitability is complex.
In response, we’ve suggested the development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy that focuses on three key pillars: People, Planet, and Prosperity. This approach has highlighted the client’s openness to innovative ideas, providing both opportunities and challenges. The opportunity lies in the freedom to think creatively and propose actions that benefit the company, its employees, and the environment. The challenge, however, is navigating the absence of a defined deliverable from the client, making it imperative to align our proposals with their expectations.
Moreover, as it is a family-owned business, we have identified the significant advantages of integrating sustainability early in their operational strategy, presenting an opportunity for growth and innovation. Our client is keen on achieving B Corp Certification, a commendable goal considering fewer than 30 companies in the food product sector within their operational country have earned this distinction. This ambition has shed light on the increasing incorporation of sustainability in business practices, showcasing its wide-ranging benefits. These include improving employee well-being, fostering sustainable practices across the supply chain, enhancing the company’s reputation, and developing a brand that resonates with consumers; growing demand for sustainability.
Addressing the unique challenges of formulating a sustainability strategy in a family-owned business is crucial. Our client, who fulfills roles as both shareholders and directors—with one serving as the HR director—highlights the importance of well-structured internal communication. This ensures that employees have a clear and open channel to express their concerns. Prioritizing employee well-being is not only fundamental to fostering a positive internal environment but also plays a significant role in achieving a high B Corp certification score, emphasizing its critical role in our client’s sustainable development journey.
Furthermore, this experience has been immensely educational for me, particularly in integrating sustainability into my professional ambitions. Working closely with a team that brings a wealth of knowledge on the subject has been both enlightening and inspiring. Its enabled me to learn, contribute unique insights, and apply my diverse skill set to the sustainability field.
Sustainability, while fashionable, is accompanied by significant responsibility and awareness. My work with this client has been a journey of mutual learning and adaptation, embracing the principles of sustainability in both thought and action. This project has not only reinforced my commitment to sustainable practices but also highlighted the importance of collaboration and open-mindedness in achieving our shared goals.
