Navigating through the challenges of clashing team dynamics, unfamiliarity with tools like the Bloomberg Terminal, and a team merger during the project’s initial month made me nervous about reaching our goal. However, as we now approach the submission of our final deliverable - a comprehensive database of 700 companies and a report - I’m delighted to say that it all fell into place. The icing on the cake is the friendships I've formed during this journey. Witnessing the successful culmination of our efforts and receiving positive feedback from both our client and the Professor leaves me feeling overwhelmed in a positive way. This experience prompts reflection on the invaluable lessons gained, applicable not only to this project but as I transition to the real world post-SIPA.
In consulting, success isn’t solely tied to reaching the precise goal you initially set: I’ve learned that consulting isn’t solely about rigidly achieving predetermined goals. I used to believe that consulting involved setting a goal, and if you didn’t achieve it, it was considered a “failure”. Contrary to my initial perception it involves adapting targets based on emerging research and findings, ultimately creating a deliverable that adds value to the client’s work. Originally aiming for a database of 3000 U.S. companies affected by the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, we adjusted our approach as we discovered the data might not exist. We transformed our deliverable into a sample database for companies with available data, a modification validated through client conversations. As we prepare to submit the final deliverable, we, as a team, questioned whether this contribution brings value to the client. We confidently affirm that our database will prove beneficial to the client.
Don’t be intimidated by the thought of using new tools and technologies: When the idea of using tools like the Bloomberg Terminal, Refinitiv, and Capital IQ was discussed, I felt a wave of nervousness. They seemed like tools tailored for the finance experts on Wall Street. How would I navigate these tools? Yet, by the project’s midpoint, I found myself leading the charge in mining data from Capital IQ, providing a sample that genuinely intrigued our client. The apprehension I initially felt faded away as I underwent training for all three platforms, revealing that their names might have seemed intimidating, but they turned out to be surprisingly user-friendly and valuable skills worth acquiring.
Don’t allow setbacks in the project to diminish your motivation: Encountering project hiccups, moments of frustration, perceived failure, and team disagreements are inherent to consulting’s challenges. Despite experiencing these emotions, maintaining confidence in oneself and the team, coupled with a firm commitment to goals, is paramount. Short-term setbacks shouldn’t overshadow long-term objectives; perseverance and persistence emerge as the cornerstones of a successful consulting project.
