I am thrilled to begin my journey on this consulting project, and I am hopeful that together we can set a new benchmark for responsible and impactful fashion.
The first steps on any journey often begin with a mix of uncertainty and excitement, and stepping into this consulting project was no different. I found myself working with a luxury athletic apparel brand that is focused on making the products more sustainable while also giving them a creative edge. Known for its innovative design, this brand has built its reputation in the market on a foundation to a deep connection to the sport it represents. Over the next few months our team would be conducting an industry benchmark analysis, reviewing various sustainability reporting metrics and providing recommendations to align their efforts with the best practices in the industry. This project offers a unique opportunity to dive into creative thinking and I am excited to collaborate with the client and my team in making it a success!
Our initial meetings set the tone for the project. We met with the company head of sustainability, where we quickly gained an understanding of the project’s goals, team dynamics and responsibilities. Following these initial discussions, our focus moved to improving the company’s sustainability reporting, strategizing ways to better engage consumers, and positioning the brand among competitors, particularly those who have made significant strides in sustainable athletic apparel.
To gain a deeper understanding of the industry landscape, we visited several retail stores in New York known for their sustainable business models. The stores ranged from apparel brands to outdoor equipment retailers, each with a unique approach. For instance, we observed that some stores actively promoted their repair programs, allowing customers to bring in used products for mending instead of purchasing new ones. Other brands emphasized their commitment to reducing carbon emissions by sourcing materials from renewable resources and running certain programs to upcycle old garments into new ones. These store visits were insightful, and it helped us as a team to formulate a strategy for our client to model their sustainable approach in a way to resonate with the customers and strengthen their connection with the brand.
As the project continues to evolve, I have come to appreciate that it is not just a professional challenge- it is about collaboration and empathy. I am fortunate to be a part of a team that understands and respects each other's professional and personal commitments. We have been able to build a supportive environment, making it easier to tackle the challenges we might face. Having a faculty member as a mentor has been an invaluable resource for the team. Their thoughtful feedback ensures that we remain aligned with our objectives while encouraging us to think critically.
Although our project is still in its early stages, the direction is clear. The next phase will involve presenting these benchmarking insights to the client, along with recommendations on how to improve their sustainability report and customer experience. One of the initiatives we have planned as a team is a design workshop with the client that will involve building on creative designs for more casual yet sporty apparel. We believe this could be a good addition for the company in terms of consumer engagement. This project has already offered valuable insights into how sustainability is evolving in the outdoor and athletic apparel sectors, where performance and durability must now coexist with environmental responsibility.
I like to believe that in times like these where the focus has shifted towards sustainability and climate change, it is imperative to focus on brands that are striving to protect the environment through conscious business practices. Looking ahead, I am excited to see how the project unfolds and work with my team in making this an opportunity to learn, collaborate and strategize.
