As part of the Sustainable Investing Research Consulting Project this semester, my team has been collaborating with a prominent international non-profit organization dedicated to developing and promoting sustainability reporting standards worldwide. Our project focused on assessing the potential impact of their forthcoming Biodiversity Standard on policymakers and investors, primarily in the North American region.

The journey leading up to our interim presentation was a whirlwind of extensive research, analysis, and teamwork. We delved into the intricate landscape of biodiversity disclosure policies and regulations across various U.S. jurisdictions, mapping out the current state and identifying relevant legislative bodies exploring or implementing related measures. This exercise allowed us to analyse the alignment between these policies and our client's standards, enabling us to provide recommendations on how their standards could be integrated or potentially mandated within these frameworks. Additionally, we explored the growing demand for biodiversity disclosures among investors. By gathering insights from public consultations, investor initiatives, and industry forums, we aimed to identify U.S. investors who may be inclined to require such disclosures, thereby amplifying the impact of disclosure practices. We compiled a comprehensive database of these investors, along with evidence of their interest in biodiversity-related impacts, dependencies, opportunities, and risks.

The interim presentation itself was a pivotal moment, allowing us to share our findings and recommendations with the esteemed professionals at our client organization. It was both exhilarating and humbling to engage with experts at the forefront of sustainability reporting, witnessing their interest in our research. The Q&A session was particularly enlightening, as their feedback and guidance offered fresh perspectives and highlighted areas for further exploration.

One of the most valuable lessons from the interim presentation was the importance of clear and concise communication when presenting complex information to stakeholders. While our research was thorough, we recognized the need to refine our storytelling approach to ensure that our findings and recommendations resonated effectively with the client. A unique aspect of this project was the opportunity to receive feedback from another team working on a similar biodiversity-focused project during the class. This peer review process provided valuable insights and allowed us to view our work through a different lens, further enhancing our understanding and approach.

Personally, this consulting project has been an enriching learning experience that has pushed me to grow in various aspects. It has reinforced the importance of collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication in delivering impactful solutions to sustainability challenges. Working closely with my team, navigating challenges, and incorporating feedback has been a rewarding journey that has prepared me for future endeavours in the field of sustainability.

Moving forward, we plan to incorporate the valuable feedback received, further refine our analysis, and enhance the quality of our deliverables. Our goal is to provide actionable insights that can contribute to our client's mission of promoting transparency and accountability in sustainability reporting, particularly in the realm of biodiversity conservation.
