When I started the project, I expected the biggest challenge to be the research itself, digging into sustainability trends, analyzing data, and drawing meaningful conclusions. What I did not anticipate was how much of the learning would come from navigating uncertainty, managing expectations, and working through team dynamics. This experience was not just about conducting research, it was about figuring out how to work effectively in an unpredictable and sometimes frustrating process.

Defining the Scope: Learning to Work with Uncertainty

Early on, one of the biggest challenges was figuring out exactly what the client wanted. Sustainability is a broad field with endless research directions and narrowing it down to something both meaningful and actionable wasn’t as straightforward as I had hoped.

In the beginning, we explored multiple scenarios to present to the client, each with different research directions. But as we worked through them, I found myself questioning how much time we should invest in possibilities that might not even be chosen. It felt inefficient, like shooting in the dark, hoping one of our ideas would stick.

At first, I resisted this ambiguity. I prefer working on well-defined projects with clear deliverables, where I know from the start exactly what needs to be done. But this experience forced me to become comfortable with an iterative approach. Instead of treating every research path as equally important, I learned to focus on the most impactful and realistic options, recognizing that refining and reshaping the scope is part of the consulting process.

Communication

Conversations required more effort from both sides. It was not just about making myself understood but also about fully grasping what others meant. Research discussions stretched as we clarified meanings, adjusted phrasing, and ensured nothing was lost in translation. Writing deliverables became a careful balancing act, not just choosing the right words, but making sure they carried the right intent.

At times, I reread the same sentence, questioning whether I truly understood it. The challenge wasn’t one-sided; everyone was navigating the same uncertainty. But in this process, I became more attuned to how language shapes thought and how different perspectives, shaped by culture and experience, brought unexpected depth to our discussions. In the end, the extra effort did not just refine our communication, it made our work stronger.

Finding Focus in a Collaborative Environment

One thing I did not expect was the mental challenge of working alongside another team tackling a similar project for the same client. Even though we were not directly competing, it was hard not to compare our progress with theirs. Were they moving faster? Did their research seem stronger? Were we missing something?

At first, I let these comparisons affect me more than I should have. But as the project progressed, I realized that each research journey is its own, no two teams will approach a problem the same way, and that’s okay. Instead of worrying about how we measured up, I started focusing more on whether our insights were meaningful and valuable. In the end, I learned to trust our approach, knowing that our work stood on its own merits.

Team Management: Balancing Accountability and Understanding

Another key aspect of the project was navigating team dynamics and workflow efficiency. In any research collaboration, the collective effort shapes the outcome and ensuring that all perspectives are incorporated is essential. Balancing different working styles, availability, and approaches to problem-solving required patience and adaptability.

At times, I noticed variations in how tasks were approached and completed, which initially led to concerns about workflow consistency. However, rather than making assumptions, I focused on open communication and alignment of expectations. This experience reinforced the importance of proactive collaboration and accountability, skills that are crucial in both research and professional settings. Moving forward, I will apply these insights to foster more cohesive and productive teamwork in future projects.
