Graduate school can be defined in the following three words: rigorous, multifaceted, and challenging. But all of these difficulties become manageable when working collaboratively within a team.

Now, in what ways can you actively ensure you will be part of a cohesive and collaborative team when you do not even have a say in selecting your fellow team members?

You have to trust the process. Believe in your peers and your faculty. Navigate your team’s diversity.

In an international school setting, the diverse backgrounds and experiences of fellow peers can provide valuable contribution to the success of a team, and even to personal growth. But diversity can also bring strong challenges, especially when the team members’ different interests lead to different responsibilities and priorities within a busy team environment. My team and I struggled the consequences of a busy schedule during this second part of the course.

Working in a busy team environment is always challenging, and it becomes even more difficult when team members have other priorities to juggle. In the past few weeks, our team faced one of the most significant challenges, as we had to work around midterms and Capstone travels. With the members of the team prioritizing other responsibilities, it was not easy to stay on track with our goals. Moreover, the added challenge of working from different countries, time zones, and work settings further complicated matters. However, our team managed to successfully overcome these obstacles through effective collaboration, support, and dedication.

One of the most crucial aspects of our success was our ability to work together and support each other through these challenging times. We made sure to communicate regularly and provide updates on our progress, even if we were working from different parts of the world and with limited access to electricity and internet connection. By doing so, we could ensure that everyone was on the same page and that we were all working towards our shared objectives.

Another factor that contributed to our success was having each other's backs when one of us was unavailable. We understood that everyone had other priorities to take care of, and we made sure to step in and cover for each other when necessary. This allowed us to keep the project moving forward, even when one of us was unable to contribute at a particular time.

Most importantly, we never let these challenges affect our performance or our commitment to the project. Despite the added stress and uncertainty, we remained focused on our goals and continued to work towards achieving them. By staying dedicated and focused, we were able to overcome the obstacles we faced and achieve the outcomes we set out to accomplish.

On our last communication with Professor Flammer, she wrote: “In short: your client seems happy with your team’s performance and they especially highlighted your team’s high degree of professionalism”. This evidences that with effective collaboration, support, and dedication, we can overcome these challenges and achieve our goals. A special shoutout to my amazing team members and friends Alizeh, Mallika and Rocio for contributing to embrace the past week’s challenges to bring about successful results.

As we move forward, we can use the lessons we learned during these past few weeks to continue to work together effectively and achieve even greater success.
