As I delve into the intricacies of invasive species, a term that once lingered on the periphery of my understanding has now assumed a pivotal role in my academic journey this semester. In its simplest form, invasive species are non-native organisms intentionally or unintentionally introduced to an ecosystem, potentially disrupting its balance, and contributing to habitat loss (Evans et al., 2011). Their adaptability, lack of natural predators, and voracious appetites make eradicating them a vital ecological goal. This imperative aligns with our client's involvement in the fashion industry, where the skins of three invasive species—lionfish, carp, and python—transformed into leather for business-to-business (B2B) transactions with fashion brands.

Our project's core objective is to conduct rigorous academic research, scrutinizing the ecological and socio- economic impact of transforming invasive species' skin into leather. The subsequent development of a white paper and press release aims to showcase our client's market-driven strategy in addressing invasive species. Emphasis will be placed on elucidating the benefits, potential for public-private partnerships, and the broader applicability of this sustainable approach across various sectors.

Despite our team members' diverse and credible backgrounds, we encountered a significant challenge in defining "invasive species." Our collective lack of prior experience in biodiversity-related fields compounded it. Guided by insights from workshops and classes, we recognized the importance of defining the scope, context, and boundaries. To address this, we engaged with a biodiversity professor from the Columbia Climate School, who shed light on the broader implications of invasive species as a significant threat to biodiversity, influencing human economies. This perspective resonated with our client's concerns about quantifying the impacts of invasive species removal, highlighting the absence of historical data and inadequate frameworks to support such assessments.

Amid these challenges, our team, in collaboration with the client, has identified government funding as a critical focus. The client aspires to government subsidies to bolster their supply chain. Our ongoing efforts involve mapping the supply chain and discussing potential government funding interventions and capital flow in subsequent meetings.

Despite these hurdles, our team is persistent in embracing this uncharted territory. The collaborative spirit forged in our initial workshop, where we formalized our working methods and established ground rules, has laid a solid foundation. Resources from our professors and teaching assistants and within our team provide valuable insights, ensuring we navigate this journey with clarity. Moreover, as a team, we created a detailed daily and weekly Gantt Chart so we could track our work and not stay or jump to another job before finishing it. That makes our work becomes more systematic. Overall, thanks to how the class is structured, we have access to resources and knowledge, making us more confident in doing our work and facing the client.

As we venture further into this project, the intersection of sustainability, biodiversity, and fashion presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Our commitment to understanding and addressing these challenges underscores our determination to effect positive change. The project's multifaceted nature demands a holistic approach, and we are ready to explore every facet, delve into the complexities, and contribute meaningfully to the broader discourse on sustainable practices. In shaping the narrative of transforming invasive species into fashion leather, we aim to benefit our clients and inspire a more general conversation about innovative and sustainable solutions in industries that often operate on the fringes of ecological responsibility. Through our research, analysis, and collaborative efforts, we aim to make a lasting impact that transcends the boundaries of academia and resonates in real-world applications.
