This course has significantly influenced my perception of the impact investing landscape and given insight into its intricate challenges and potential contributions to shaping our future. Central to impact investing is an accountable impact measurement methodology, as the absence of such a framework allows for unfounded claims of positive contributions, resulting in the pervasive issue of greenwashing. In achieving this, cooperation between the academic and private sectors is key.
Accountability Problem
The realm of the circular economy, specifically within the domain of amenity reuse, remains relatively unexplored. Our client stands as a pioneer, delving into uncharted territories. Evaluating the impact of renting versus purchasing new household amenities represented a novel calculation, particularly in the context of the United States market. This makes accountability for our work essential to ensure that our findings are not used for unintended purposes.
Fortunately, our client exemplifies professionalism and trustworthiness, upholding high standards of accountability in their work. Rather than making unsubstantiated claims about the impact of their business, they prefer not to show any impact at all. In a startup landscape where growth is everything, such a commitment to integrity is rare. This ethos is what prompted their request for our assistance.
The same commitment from our client facilitated a shared understanding of our challenges, leading to collaborative efforts in locating relevant reports for reference. Ultimately, with our client's support, we identified essential impact proxy data, meeting our stringent criteria through peer review and endorsement by reputable organizations such as the EU Commission. The result was the successful development of an impact calculator, greatly appreciated by our client.
Private-Academic Cooperation
The significance of our work became evident as our client gained the ability to measure their impact, enhancing their prospects for securing the capital needed to extend their runway and amplify their influence. Echoing the previous chapter, this work can only be done with the cooperation between the private sector and academic institutions. This realization prompted me to reflect on the potential deficiency of private-academic sector cooperation in my country's business ecosystem.
Indonesia, in the phase of industrial growth and a shift away from agricultural and resource-based GDP reliance, stands at a critical point. The outcome of this phase can determine whether the nation propels toward prosperity or stays in the middle-income trap. While my background experience has primarily been in the energy sector, which emphasizes collaboration between academia and the private sector, this experience broadened my perspective. It highlighted the privilege I've had in one sector, revealing a lack of similar cooperation in other areas, including in the growing startup ecosystem. Motivated by this realization, I aspire to pursue a career that aligns with sustainable development goals while fostering collaboration between the private and academic sectors on a broader scale.
