The Journey is Just as Important as the Destination

I think it's a common human trait to be strongly motivated to achieve a specific objective, to the extent that we frequently become overly fixated on the outcomes and forget to enjoy the journey. My experience with the Sustainability Investing Research Consulting project has shown me the value of savoring the journey and appreciating the lessons acquired along the path. The path I've traveled so far hasn't been without its challenges. I've encountered numerous obstacles, but overcoming them, both as a team and individually has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
One of the primary challenges we faced in our team revolved around team collaboration. Initially, our large team struggled with the complexities of working together. With six individuals collaborating on a project, we frequently encountered conflicting ideas, differing expectations, and diverse perspectives. Personally, I found this situation to be quite overwhelming at the outset. However, following advice from Professor Minard, we came to understand the importance of engaging in open and honest conversations to address any misunderstandings that arose. This was crucial for establishing a healthy team dynamic, which ultimately enhanced our productivity. This course has significantly contributed to my personal development as well. Throughout this journey, I also learned the importance of striking a balance between being accommodating and assertive. I realized that I needed to ensure that my voice was heard and convey my points clearly. As I reflect on my experiences, there are two key lessons I would like to share:
Firstly, it is important to realize that fostering positive dynamics within a team is crucial for project success. When collaborating with a team, don't hesitate to engage in candid and transparent discussions about your work preferences, expectations, strengths as well as weaknesses, and be open to learning from your fellow team members. When defining team roles and assigning tasks, take into consideration everyone’s skills and their aspirations for skill development. Occasionally, spending time together outside of the project can be beneficial for team bonding. Participating in such team-building activities can always be advantageous. Additionally, always remain open to receiving feedback.
Secondly, on a personal level, it's essential to recognize that you need to carve out your space within the team. I am not always very assertive. However, I realized that to make a meaningful contribution, I must voice my opinions and ensure that my ideas are acknowledged and heard. So, I realized how important it is to not be shy when interacting with team members.
Speaking of the hard skills I have learnt, I've acquired a skill that I'm particularly excited
about, which is using Bloomberg Terminal and Refinitiv. As someone without a background in finance, software tools like Bloomberg Terminal and Refinitiv always appeared as complex instruments typically utilized by sophisticated finance professionals on Wall Street. Just the idea of operating these terminals felt intimidating. Initially, when we met with the client, we were quite anxious because none of us had any prior experience with these software platforms. However, we were genuinely excited about the opportunity. It took a significant amount of familiarization, numerous attempts, discussions with library staff, and conversations with peers to eventually learn how to extract the data. Today, as I sat alongside a fellow team member, analyzing data from both datasets, I felt an immense sense of accomplishment, knowing that I have acquired a highly valuable skill.
Therefore, as we strive to deliver an outstanding project, I am content when reflecting on the journey we have undertaken thus far and eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
