In this reflection blog, I will be sharing three reflections that I have from recent experiences. I would like to highlight the importance of understanding the concentration, contextuality, and consistency of actors, processes, and objectives in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of a market.
Concentration
The voluntary carbon market operates similar to other markets, with various actors playing different roles in its functioning. However, our analysis of stakeholder dynamics in this market highlighted the concentration of power among a few actors. Specifically, verifiers such as Verra and Gold Standard, who are predominantly based in the Global North, enjoyed better financial and social standing than other stakeholders, leading to questions of equity and fairness. In our research process, since Verra holds 90% of the market share, there were concerns about whether our research findings related to carbon credit verification could be generalized to the entire market or if they were specific to Verra, the major market player’s inadequate practices. Thus, it was necessary to delve deeper into transaction-level parameters to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the verification processes.
Contextuality
The voluntary carbon market is not a homogeneous entity but rather comprises several markets with significant regional differences. Developing regions such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America primarily supply the market, while North America and Europe are the primary demand markets. During our research process, we found that overlooking the contextual nature of the voluntary carbon markets could deflect attention from actual issues and delay progress. For example, in our observations, we noticed a trend towards nature-based projects, which are more difficult to verify than energy-based projects. Additionally, the higher verification costs associated with nature-based projects make it more challenging for developing countries, particularly those in Africa, to participate in the market, despite their high potential for energy-based projects. Being conscious of the contextual nature of the markets helped us to produce more nuanced recommendations, understand the challenges better, and engage with diverse perspectives across contexts, leading to the generation of new ideas.
Consistency
While reflecting on the research, the significance of grasping the consistency in perspectives among the involved actors and the processes they employ, seemed to be critical. Given the various sub-markets and regional distinctions in the voluntary carbon market, identifying the alignment of opinions and visions among stakeholders has been essential for attaining a comprehensive understanding of the market. Since the voluntary carbon market is in its nascent stage, actors held divergent ideas about its evolution and the roles that different entities should play. For instance, some actors didn't envision a role for the government, while others believed government involvement to be crucial. By examining the underlying worldviews that shape their opinions and challenges, we were able to navigate the market's complexities. In addition, analysis of consistency in processes showed the similarities and discrepancies between procedures utilized in nature-based and energy-based projects, each encompassing varying degrees of verification complexity and costs. This awareness of inconsistent processes within the market has enabled us to comprehend challenges in their proper context and devise more relevant recommendations.
9C Framework
Based on my reflections across the different blogs, I have created a 9C framework that I could apply in future research and projects in the form of an initial checklist or a reference method.
Component
Description
I. Research Approach
Embrace Complexity
Navigate the intricacies of the subject matter by adopting systems thinking approach to understand the complex nature of the research topic.
Balance
Causation
Approach research and causation with balance, acknowledging that limited information may not be sufficient to fully attribute causation.
AcknowledgeConcentration
Acknowledge the various actors' roles in the system, and work towards understanding the concentration of power, and diversify the sources and research methods.
RecognizeContextuality
Maintain awareness of the contextual nature of the subject matter, considering regional differences and the potential impact of these variations.
Assess for Consistency
Evaluate the various stakeholders’ opinions, visions, and actions, identifying the level of consistency among their perspectives and processes. By doing so, gain a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter while recognizing the underlying worldviews that shape the system’s ideas and challenges.
II. Teamwork
Foster Co-creation
Encourage collaboration with the client and within the team, utilizing the diverse backgrounds and skill sets of team members to achieve project objectives.
Build Connections
Establish strong connections with external resources, experts, and other project stakeholders, leveraging their knowledge and expertise to create a robust and effective plan.
Align Coexistence
Create an environment where personal and work interests align, enabling team members to contribute to the project based on their passions and expertise.
Seek Challenges
Promote excitement in team members by helping them seek challenges that motivate them to aim higher and maintain high levels of motivation throughout the project.
