The Impact of Private Equity on Healthcare Service Prices And the Need for Regulation at the State Level

Summary
How has private equity (PE) ownership in the healthcare sector—spanning hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and medical device manufacturers—evolved over time? In recent years, there have been reports of financial distress among healthcare facilities and rising medical costs due to PE ownership, leading to concerns about reduced healthcare access. However, a lack of systematic surveys on this topic has resulted in limited information regarding the real trends in PE ownership and its impact on pricing and consumers. Given this context, our project aims to analyze the extent to which PE ownership affects healthcare service costs and the financial health of the sector at the state level in the United States. Additionally, we will examine the current state-level policies and regulations related to PE ownership and conduct a cross-analysis to propose necessary policy recommendations. In this post, I will summarize our discussions within the team and with the client since the project’s inception, covering the project scope, work plan, and research methodology, and outline the next steps.
Project Scope
Our client has conducted research on various factors that may influence healthcare services and management. This project specifically focuses on assessing the impact of PE ownership. Since healthcare facilities vary widely in size and function—from clinics to hospitals, nursing homes, and hospices—we decided to collect broad information before narrowing our scope, allowing the client to make an informed decision.
Additionally, as the client expressed interest in state-level policies and regulations, we selected four primary states for analysis: Connecticut (CT), New Jersey (NJ), Oregon (OR), and Washington (WA). Our research will examine whether these states have existing regulations on PE ownership in healthcare, how those regulations have evolved, and their effectiveness. The ultimate goal is to develop a data-driven policy proposal based on our findings.
Work Plan (Methodology)
Our research approach includes two main components:
- PE Ownership and its Effects – Conducting extensive literature reviews, data collection, and analysis.
- Policy and Regulation – Investigating current policies and regulations regarding PE ownership in the selected states.
By reviewing available data, we aim to identify effective methods for data collection and analysis. Since healthcare services encompass a wide range of sectors, we plan to present existing data to the client and work collaboratively to refine the project’s focus.
Additionally, we arranged an interview with a professor at Columbia University specializes in the relationship between healthcare pricing and PE ownership. This expert consultation will provide valuable insights and feedback on our research direction.
Team Collaboration
Our team consists of four members with diverse professional backgrounds: two with experience in healthcare consulting (including internships), one with clinical experience as a physician, and one with a financial sector background. Given the varying expertise within the team, aligning our perspectives while designing the research plan posed challenges. However, through a collaborative approach, we successfully reached a consensus on our strategy.
From the outset, we prioritized flexibility in addressing the client’s needs. Our initial meeting with the client established a strong foundation, and we implemented a structured workflow, including weekly meetings and post-meeting reflections within the team. This ensured that all members shared a unified understanding of the research direction.
What we learned
Throughout this process, we have gained the following insights:
- Effective collaboration requires a clear understanding of the knowledge gaps among team members from different backgrounds.
- In complex fields like healthcare, where subtopics are extensive, it is crucial to allocate sufficient time for narrowing the research focus on consultation with the client.
- Clearly defining the work plan enables better management of time and resources, ensuring the feasibility of the project.
Next Steps
In the coming weeks, we will refine our research plan based on literature reviews and expert interviews. We will continuously seek feedback from the client to ensure alignment with their expectations. Additionally, we will update the work plan as needed to stay on schedule and successfully deliver the final output on time.
