The journey through the Sustainable Investing Research Initiative (SIRI) class has been both intense and enriching. Throughout the semester, it demanded a blend of individual expertise and teamwork, offering numerous opportunities for learning and interaction. As a participant in the EMPA Program, I anticipated a mix of professional and academic experiences, and SIRI delivered impressively on both fronts. Prof. Sara Minard and her TA encouraged us to maintain focus and bring intensity to our classes, enhancing our learning with guest speakers and seminars. My only regret is not taking this class or engaging with the SIRI Project in my first semester. However, as we say in Brazil, it’s better late than never.
Our engagement with our client provided a deep dive into the venture capital world, underscoring the vital role of funding, support, and mentorship for startups, particularly those targeting social and environmental impacts. Our group project involved extensive research, communication with the client, interviews with other stakeholders, and frequent exchanges of challenges and feedback with our peers, Prof. Sara, the TA, and guest speakers. Learning from those who have faced similar challenges was invaluable. In addition, it made us delve into Climate Tech, exploring the correlations between emissions and investments, and understanding the need for innovation to alter the current course were highlights of our project, showcasing our client's excellence in these areas.
Another key takeaway from this course is the importance of diverse skills and backgrounds within a team. My background in law and politics and my extroverted nature have made me a peacemaker and a strong negotiator. My peers contributed significant design, finance, and analytical skills, mostly from private sector experiences, which were crucial to our development. Initially, the strength of our group was unclear, but I am now convinced that our diversity is our greatest asset.
As this course and my program come to a close with my graduation this May, I extend my heartfelt thanks to SIRI for welcoming me into this incredible cohort. I am grateful for this opportunity and will carry these meaningful lessons forward in my career, aiming to integrate sustainable investing principles into my future endeavors.
