The project I am working on is situated within the financial sector, with a specific focus on the emerging sustainable finance landscape in Armenia. This involves examining how domestic financial institutions - such as commercial banks, insurance companies, pension funds, and microfinance organizations - are beginning to integrate sustainability considerations into their activities, and how regulatory frameworks, taxonomies, and capital market infrastructure are evolving to support these efforts. Armenia presents a unique context for this work: it has a relatively small and developing financial market, with limited participation in green bonds or sustainability-linked products, yet it is also actively exploring how to align its national strategy with international sustainable finance principles. Our task is to analyze this ecosystem and identify opportunities, gaps, and pathways that can enable greater capital mobilization toward climate and sustainability objectives.
What excites me about this experience is the opportunity to connect global frameworks of sustainable finance with the realities of a small but ambitious market. I expect to deepen my understanding of how countries with less developed capital markets can adapt international standards - such as green taxonomies and disclosure requirements - to local needs and capacities. I am also looking forward to learning more about the roles played by international development partners, multilateral banks, and private-sector innovators in shaping Armenia’s financial landscape. This project challenges me to think critically about the intersection of finance, regulation, and sustainable development, while also practicing the analytical and communication skills needed to present findings in a way that is clear, actionable, and relevant to policymakers and market actors. Ultimately, I hope this practicum will give me not only a richer knowledge of sustainable finance in emerging markets but also practical insights into how finance can be a driver of inclusive growth and climate resilience.
