Collaboration, Initiative, and Impact: Lessons from a Sustainable Consulting Project
Entering SIPA directly from undergrad, with limited professional and zero consulting
Entering SIPA directly from undergrad, with limited professional and zero consulting experience, I started a hands-on sustainable consulting project that challenged and transformed my academic mindset. Our objective was ambitious: to increase public awareness of a client's innovative approach to converting invasive species into commercial leather, thereby attracting more capital. This required us to delve into academic research on invasive species and assess the ecological and socio-economic impacts of this approach, exploring the potential for public-private partnerships. The project was not only intriguing but also demanding, pushing me from a passive student role into a proactive, client-focused professional stance
One of my key takeaways is the critical importance of team bonding and constructive feedback. Initially, we dedicated time to understanding each team member's background, strengths, weaknesses, working styles, communication preferences, and conflict-resolution approaches. This deep dive into our individual differences and similarities was more than just an introductory exercise. It was a strategic move to knit a tightly integrated team capable of combating the challenges of the project. Establishing trust, ground rules, and shared values was fundamental for our effective collaboration over the past two months. It created a safe and supportive environment for open dialogue, where regular, honest feedback, focusing on strengths and addressing limitations, became a norm rather than an exception. Although it seemed daunting to openly discuss team dynamics issues, such as our lack of a clear weekly to-do list confusing each person’s next move, this process not only clarified our immediate tasks but also improved our project management skills collectively and helped us confront and resolve our issues. By assigning specific tasks to each member, we enhanced motivation and ensured everyone was aligned and productive.
Another critical lesson was the importance of initiative and client-focused thinking. Instead of passively awaiting instructions, I embraced a proactive role, suggesting ideas and solutions that aligned with the client's ultimate goal of leveraging their special leather conversion for greater public impact and government funding. This required a deep dive into the client's business model, understanding the nuances of the invasive species problem, and identifying innovative avenues for public engagement and capital attraction. This shift in perspective prompted us to investigate the supply chain structure and explore strategies to attract funding at various points, thereby scaling the client's business. This proactive approach not only broadened our understanding of the project but also enabled us to identify and pursue opportunities for greater impact.
Lastly, strategic communication emerged as a key skill. The "GAME" framework (recommended by the speaker in the consulting workshop), an acronym I learned to appreciate deeply, became a cornerstone of our approach. "G" stands for setting clear Goals for each communication; "A" emphasizes understanding the Audience, their knowledge, and perspectives; "M" is about crafting the Message to resonate effectively; and "E" involves the Expression, ensuring the delivery is appropriate and impactful. My initial attempt to discuss the supply chain with the client lacked depth because I had not fully considered these elements. I realized that my questions, while relevant, did not convey our ultimate aim to enhance the client’s ability to attract capital. This oversight led to a superficial exchange, where the client redirected us toward the positive impacts backed by academic research. The "GAME" framework taught me the importance of thoughtful preparation and the strategic framing of communications to ensure our messages not only reach the client but also prompt meaningful action.
As we approach our next meeting with the client, I am eager to apply these insights and see the results of our refined approach. This project has been a transformative journey, equipping me with valuable skills and a deeper understanding of sustainable consulting practices.
