As our engagement with our client draws to a close, it’s a moment of reflection—not just on the work itself but on the journey, I undertook as part of a team and the broader lessons learned. This project, focused on developing strategic guidance for pitching nature-based solutions (NBS) to multilateral banks, has all about the importance of collaboration, the necessity of adaptability, and the importance of aligning with client expectations.

At its core, this project was about teamwork. From day one, it was clear that no single person could deliver the depth of research, strategic insight, and problem-solving required. Our team brought together diverse skill sets—from policy analysis to financial analysis, and from strategic communication to financial modelling. The synergy of our collective expertise allowed us to tackle challenges that wouldn’t have been possible alone. Each member had a voice, and decisions were made collaboratively, with input from everyone. This environment of mutual respect and shared ownership was crucial, especially as we navigated a project with evolving scope and high expectations.

If there’s one thing this project reinforced, it’s that adaptability is not just an asset—it’s a requirement. What began as a straightforward task of creating a pitch deck for and a report about NBS for the client quickly evolved into a multifaceted initiative. The scope expanded to include tailored recommendations, and added stakeholders that were not apparent at the beginning. While these changes added complexity, they also enriched the project and made the deliverables more impactful. This evolution required flexibility from the team. Research timelines were adjusted, new expertise was brought in, and deliverables were reshaped to meet emerging needs. It was a dynamic process, and while it came with its share of stress, it also highlighted the importance of staying open to change and finding opportunities within challenges.

Working with our client presented a unique challenge: balancing the technical rigor of our deliverables with the practical needs of the client. Early on, we engaged in a series of conversations to deeply understand their priorities. This dialogue shaped our approach. We emphasized clarity and practicality, ensuring that our materials were not only informative but also compelling and easy to implement. For example, the pitch deck was designed to speak directly to multilateral banks’ investment strategies, with a focus on co-benefits like climate resilience and community well-being. The detailed report, meanwhile, provided robust evidence and case studies to support the recommendations. This also helped us tremendously in our final presentation to the client. We had, to our relief and happiness, answered a lot of the questions that they wanted and presented new questions to think about. The questions the client asked of us in the end also helped us think about new perspectives which we added to our final recommendations.

I hope our deliverables will play a pivotal role in advancing the clients’ work and inspiring greater investment in nature-based solutions. For our team, the experience has been great. I’ve grown not only as a professional but also as a collaborator, and made some friends. The lessons from this project will undoubtedly shape my approach to future challenges. As I wrap up, one thing is clear: the end of this project is not a conclusion but a stepping stone toward greater impact and opportunity. Here's to the next challenge—and the lessons and collaborations it will bring.
